Born and raised in Cambridge, MA, William A. Lewis, Jr. was a graduate of Rindge Technical High School and Bentley College. He worked at the Natick Labs more than 20 years as a personnel specialist and was a self-employed photographer. Lewis was a member of the Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church in Whitinsville, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
