Abstract

Blacks are about 3 percent of the total faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but most of the African-American scholars at MIT are not teaching in the sciences. Some of the black faculty who do teach in the science disciplines at MIT [such as James L. Sherley] believe that they are being held back by institutional racism.
